Why Your Website Gets Enquiries — But Not the Right Ones

Getting enquiries is great — but not if most of them aren’t what your small business needs.

It’s often a fine line between attracting visitors and getting the right ones. And remember — some people won’t take the time to read your website before contacting you, so you’ll always get some enquiries that go nowhere.

1. Be Clear About What You Do

If your website is vague, visitors guess — and often guess wrong.

Example: A locksmith listing only “locksmiths services” might get calls about commercial or car locksmith services — even if they only do residential locksmith services. Specifying “residential locksmith services Melbourne” immediately filters enquiries for both type of service and location.

2. Show Who You Work With

Not everyone is your ideal client. List who your services are designed for so the right people get in touch.

Example: An NDIS support provider could note: “We provide daily living support for adults with disabilities in Melbourne’s eastern suburbs.” This prevents people outside your area, such as those in Sydney, from enquiring.

3. Give Guidance on What you Do

Sharing price ranges or service limits helps filter out enquiries that aren’t a good fit.

Example: A builder could list, “We specialise in small renovations up to $20,000.” This clearly shows which jobs are ideal.

4. Make Contact Easy

If it’s tricky to reach you, people give up or leave incorrect details. Keep contact info visible, simple, and easy to use.

Example: A tradie who displays a clear phone number and email multiple times — especially at the top of every page — avoids visitors quickly moving to a competitor.

Reality Check

No matter how clear your website is, some people just won’t take the time to read it. You will always get some enquiries that go nowhere — that’s normal. The goal is to reduce them as much as possible and focus on attracting the right clients.
