Does Facebook Help SEO? Not Really!

30 Jun 2025
by: Angela

Facebook is great for promoting your small business, but it does not directly improve your website’s search engine ranking. This is because Google does not count likes or shares as part of SEO.

While Facebook can send visitors to your site, this traffic does not boost your position in search results. For small business websites, strong SEO comes from quality content, good backlinks and well structured pages – not social media engagement.

Here are more reasons why Facebook will not help your SEO:

1. No Direct Impact on Search Rankings

Facebook’s posts, likes, and shares don’t directly influence your search engine rankings. Unlike websites or blogs, Facebook pages are not considered by search engines as authoritative sources of information.

While having a strong Facebook presence can help generate traffic to your website, it won’t directly boost your rankings in Google or other search engines.

2. Limited Indexing

Search engines cannot crawl Facebook pages as easily as they can websites. Although some content on Facebook is indexed, it is mostly limited to public profiles and posts.

The majority of content is hidden behind Facebook’s privacy settings, which means it won’t be accessible to search engine bots, preventing it from contributing to SEO efforts.

3. Short Lived Content

Facebook content tends to have a short lifespan. Posts quickly get buried under newer updates, which limits their long term value. In contrast, blog posts or evergreen website content, including FAQs and helpful tips, can remain relevant and continue driving traffic over time, improving your SEO efforts.

4. Lack of Backlinking Power

Links shared on Facebook are typically “no-follow” links, meaning they don’t pass on SEO value to your website. For SEO, high quality backlinks from authoritative websites are far more beneficial for improving your rankings.

While Facebook is a great tool for engagement, brand visibility, and community building, it should not be relied on for SEO. For long term search engine success, focus on optimising your website content, creating backlinks, and leveraging other platforms that directly impact SEO.
