Turn your Mobile Phone into a Cash Register

07 Jan 2014
by: John Stoneman

How you can do it

Are you a tradesman who spends lots of time chasing up payments from customers? Is it affecting your cash flow? Do you wish there was an easy way to receive payment from your customer as soon as the job is completed? If so, you should consider using your mobile phone to do exactly that.

Fairly recent technology now allows you to use your smart phone as a mobile credit card facility. Most of these applications do not require a card reader or card swipe machine. This new technology is perfect for tradesmen who can now receive payment from customers on the spot with their credit card.  It means no time is wasted following up on unpaid invoices and best of all your cash flow will improve!

There are quite a few companies that offer these facilities so it is best to do some research before you make a decision.Perhaps one of the easiest ones to use is PayPal (www.paypal.com.au) as it is ‘all inclusive’ – in that you do not have to worry about whether your bank supports the software. PayPal calls it’s system a virtual terminal. You will need to set up a PayPal account but when payment is made by your customer you will receive it into your PayPal account within minutes – although it may still take 2 – 3 days for the money to then be transferred into your bank account. Note your customer does not have to have a PayPal account as PayPal accepts most credit cards. Fees charged by PayPal vary according to your monthly sales. There are also facilities that you can download as applications from iTunes.

Some of the factors you need to consider when deciding which solution to use include transaction charges, whether a credit card reader is required (and if so is there a cost to acquire it), set up/joining fees, monthly fees, is it a fixed contract, and how secure is the system.

Also to note is the banks themselves have also developed this technology so you should also check with your bank to see if they can provide a suitable solution.
