Can your Business Afford NOT to have a Website?

NO, every business needs a website!

When you are a small business, especially if you are just starting out, it is extremely important to keep costs under control. However there are some things you need to spend money on if you want your business to be successful.

If you are a tradie you need to make sure you have good quality reliable tools that will get the job done quickly and to a high standard. If you are setting up a new cafe you definitely have to spend money on a good coffee machine and on decor that makes the cafe inviting. Another essential expense is a website.

websites - why you need them

Why is a website essential?

With more than 85% of people now using the Internet to search for local businesses you can’t afford not to be online. If you are not online you are effectively decreasing your potential customers by a staggering 85%. This makes it extremely difficult for a business to succeed if they do not have a website. So the question really should be can I afford NOT to have a website?

How can you keep costs down?

  • Start with a five page website. The problem that most small businesses face is that some websites can be very expensive and complex to set up. But it does not have to be this way. If you have a limited budget you can start off with a five page website.
  • Design the website to last. Your website should also be built to last – ie it needs to be designed so that it will not look ‘old fashioned’ within a couple of years. The website needs to be stylishly designed, with potential customers being able to find the information they want quickly and easily.
  • Avoid monthly fees and long term contracts. Something else that is important for you to take into account are the ongoing costs for maintaining your website. Dynamic Websites only charge a small fee for the ongoing domain registration and hosting of a website. However there are some web design companies that charge monthly fees that may not seem that much but when worked out over the year can be quite expensive – so make sure you know all the costs upfront before you agree to go ahead with the design of your website. It is also important to make sure you do not sign any long term contracts that bind you to a web design company for a lengthy period of time.
