Does your Website Need to be Secure?

13 Apr 2018
by: John Stoneman

The answer is a definite yes.  In addition, Google recently announced that all websites should be made secure by July 2018. If not, when someone tries to visit your website, using Google Chrome, they will get a message from Google stating that your website is not secure.

With around 50% of people using Google Chrome to search the internet in Australia, you will end up losing a lot of potential customers. This is because most people will chose NOT to click onto a non secure website due to cyber crimes and identity fraud risks.

1. What is a secure website?

When a website has a prefix of https (rather than http) it means it is a safe website. This is also noted by the padlock next to the URL. An example of this is our own website  – https://dynamicwebsites.com.au/.  A safe website means that information you provide (eg credit card details, email address etc) is encrypted to make it safe from hackers.  The website is made safe by the use of a SSL certificate. Originally SSL certificates were only required for e-commerce websites but now Google is requiring all websites to be secure.

2. What do I need to do to make my website secure?

You need to get a SSL certificate from an authorised provider. The SSL certificate needs to be installed correctly onto your website. Once you have your SSL certificate and your website becomes secure, you then have to  force all your visitors to access your website via the secure interface. This is a highly technical issue and varies from website to website.

3. Will making my website secure effect my SEO?

When you make your website secure it will have a positive impact on your SEO position – so the sooner you make your website secure the better.  However, as part of the process of making your website secure, you need to make sure that every page of your website is re-indexed correctly. If not, you  there will be a sharp drop in your SEO position that may take many months (if not years) to fix.
